Dr. Kim Dej, Associate Vice-Provost, Faculty, is excited to be part of the instructional team for the Arts & Science Discovery Program again in 2019. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, her graduate studies at Johns Hopkins, and her postdoctoral research at M.I.T. Dr. Dej, who came to McMaster in 2003 as a teaching-stream faculty member, has taught a range of courses from Genetics and Cell Biology to Community Engagement. She particularly enjoys interdisciplinary and collaborative teaching and learning. She has received various honours, including the McMaster President’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning, the McMaster Student Union Teaching Award, and the OCUFA Teaching Award. A proud Hamilton citizen, Dr. Dej was thrilled to receive the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award for Education and Mentorship in 2018.
The research interests of Dr. Dej include collecting and identifying round worms in Southern Ontario with her undergraduate students. In this collaboration with Dr. Bhagwati Gupta (Biology), they hope to discover new species of worms. In addition, she explores ways of teaching that engage students in authentic research. Dr. Dej led the creation of the Amylase Research project in first-year Biology, the development of a Personal Genome Testing lab in second year genetics, and the establishment of the ALLURE undergraduate research lab. She is using interactive eBooks to better enable peer-peer teaching and collaboration in the undergraduate lab. In collaboration with Dr. Sandeep Raha, Dr. Dej also works with The McMaster Children and Youth University (MCYU).
