Dr. Roger Jacobs, Professor of Biology, teaches the upper-level inquiry course ARTSSCI 4CF3 / How Science Speaks to Power. He is interested in the development of scientific literacy and critical thinking in scientists and in the lay public. He also examines how the perception of scientific proof by specialists and the public is corrected when confronted by contradicting evidence.

Dr. Jacobs received his Honours BSc from the University of Calgary (Animal Biology), and his MSc (Zoology) and PhD (Physiology and Playfair Neuroscience) from the University of Toronto. A developmental geneticist, he employs the genetic model organism, the fruitfly, Drosophila, to uncover how cell signals and the extracellular matrix regulate the development of the embryonic and growing heart. His current focus is determining how cell adhesion signals instruct heart cells to aggregate and form a tube.
