The Second-Annual McMaster Global Justice Collaboratory Workshop
11 March 2017 marked the second annual McMaster Global Justice Collaboratory Workshop hosted by the Arts & Science Program and the McMaster Global Justice Hub. Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh from the Department of History and Centre for Peace Studies began the day with a thought-provoking keynote address on the topic of retributive and restorative justice. Using the insights generated by Dr. Ibhawoh’s inspiring talk as a framework for discussion, participants subsequently worked in small groups to engage with contemporary challenges, such as the Global Refugee Crisis and Islamophobia.
The day concluded with a large group discussion that offered each group the opportunity to share their ideas and receive feedback from other participants. This collaborative discussion, facilitated by former Arts & Science program director Dr. Gary Warner, generated interesting contributions from attendees.
The enthusiasm and passion with which participants spoke underscored the potential significance of discussing pressing social issues together as a community. Sincere thanks to all those who took part in the event and the members of the Global Justice Hub Advisory Committee, especially Dr. Beth Marquis and Level III Arts & Science student Maverick Chan, for their hard work in organizing the event!
