A Photographic Deconstruction of Gender in Popular Media
Inspired by Sut Jhally’s documentary Codes of Gender, Arts & Science students Miranda Carlson-Strain and Ryan Stevenson have created an exhibit — “Reframing the Gender Paradigm: A Photographic Deconstruction of Gender in Popular Media” — with the goal of making viewers uncomfortable, encouraging them to consider gender norms that are presented in the media, and sparking discussion about the gender binary that is visible in everyday life.
Friends and fellow Artsci students offered their time to model for the photos in a shoot that lasted from early Sept. to late Oct. 2015. The photos, which were originally displayed in Nov. 2015 in the Education Gallery of the McMaster Museum of Art, will be in C-105 for the foreseeable future. Enjoy!
